Description

Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is incredibly well done, in some ways. It's great to see the scenes and (for the most part) the characters done so well--and yet at the same time, there are so many unnecessary liberties taken with the story that it just makes you shake your head. In that way it's sort of the opposite of the old Rankin/Bass cartoon.

I've tried to bring the movie as closely in line with the book as I could. Unfortunately that usually means cutting material, but that's unavoidable. Still, the movies are so extensively drawn-out (expanding a children's book into three full movies!) that I can cut freely without missing much. I did try to cut as selectively as possible; there are scenes I left in because--while they weren't actually in the book--they were still in character for the book, and there's no need to remove it. I also tried to err on the side of inclusion over smoothness, so there may be bits that seem a little rough because if I had smoothed them out we'd have lost something that I thought was worth keeping. This is also one of my first attempts at a full-movie edit, so it has rough edges that I would fix if I were doing it today.

I've called this a provisional purist mod because the real thing needs to wait for all three movies to be out in extended editions. A proper purist edit should be based on the extended editions, and some scenes ought to be swapped between movies.

NOTE: You must own a copy of the original movie to legally watch this purist edit.
